The Dutch midfielder remains a target for the Premier League side

Manchester United have got to work on reopening negotiations to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in January.

According to the Sunday Express, United coach Erik ten Hag remains interested in signing the Dutchman and is convinced he can convince him to sign.

Barça's probable elimination from the Champions League and the fact De Jong has not been a regular for Xavi could open the door to a possible exit.

Ten Hag still believes that De Jong could be the key piece in his project at United and the English club will try and please their coach.

During the summer they did reach an agreement with Barça worth around €80 million, but De Jong was reluctant to leave Camp Nou.

Now, though, he has seen that he is not first choice, with Busquets, Gavi and Pedri regularly chosen ahead of him in the bigger games this season.

Barça maintain that they do not want to sign De Jong because of his quality and age, but his salary is high and he has not accepted a reduction, while the club also need to sell players.

De Jong will try and change his situation before the World Cup, but being left on the bench in Sunday's Clasico could hit his confidence.
