Man City defender Laporte edges further away from Barcelona

Several factors would have to fall into place for Barça to move for the Frenchman

Barcelona's chances of signing Aymeric Laporte this summer have reduced. From the Catalan club's point of view, for two reasons: the first being their struggle to move players. The second, the other priorities they have during the current transfer window when it comes to signing a top-level centre-back.

Barça are working on getting rid of Samuel Umtiti's big salary, which is not easy. They will also listen to offers for Clement Lenglet. So far, only informal interest has been shown in the ex-Sevilla defender, although Barça have hope more could happen in the coming weeks. Only with the two Frenchman moved on -- as well as some attackers -- can they think about signing another central defender.

And even if that happens, Laporta would not be the top target. Barça like Laporta but there are other options they consider at a better level who are even younger -- Laporta is 27. The club are working on various fronts, knowing that everything depends on the success of Operation Exit. The club know things will speed up when teams begin preseason.

NO LAPORTE-SERGI ROBERTO SWAP

While there has been speculation about a swap deal with Manchester City involving Sergi Roberto and cash, the reality is that City still rate Laporte highly and would only consider letting him go if a good offer arrived. And Barça's situation doesn't invite optimism on that front.

That doesn't mean Sergi Roberto won't end up moving to City, though, as Pep Guardiola's side are still following his situation at Camp Nou closely with one year to run on his deal.
