Mestre said Liverpool had dropped their demands from the summer

The English club say they never made any demands for the player

Liverpool have denied the claim made by Barcelona vice president Jordi Mestre that Philippe Coutinho joined the Catalan club after they agreed a reduced fee for the Brazilian.

Mestre said at Coutinho's presentation that the deal was completed in January, not in the summer, because Liverpool had dropped their price demands.

However, sources close to the Premier League club have told The Times that Mestre's claim is false given that the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, never named a price for the player.

Liverpool refused to sell Coutinho last summer with their stance being that "he is not for sale and will still be a member of the club when the sumer transfer window closes."

Barça director Albert Soler later claimed Liverpool wanted 200 million euros, a claim which Liverpool also denied at the time.

The English club, due to Coutinho's insistence, did finally sell this month, though. Barça paid an initial fee of 120 million with another 40 million due in add-ons.
