Valverde says he has a small groin problem and was replaced as a precaution

Barcelona face a nervous wait to find out the severity of Lionel Messi's injury. The Argentine player was taken off as a precaution in Tuesday's win over Villarreal, Ernesto Valverde said in his news conference after the game, but his presence at Getafe this weekend is not guaranteed and he will undergo tests on Wednesday.

Messi was taken off at half time on his first start of the season, replaced by Ousmane Dembele, because of a muscle problem in his left leg. "He had a small groin problem," said coach Valverde, taking importance away from the knock and saying he made the decision to bring him off "as a precaution."

Despite his hopeful words, Barça will have to wait and see what Wednesday's tests reveal. He will have a scan with the club's medical team at the training ground.

Barça's next game is against Getafe on Saturday and as things stand Messi's participation in that game is far from assured. He is a major doubt. There are less than four days for him to recover. Following that, Barça play Inter Milan and Sevilla before the international break.
