The Argentine and Ansu Fati sat out Friday's sessions at the Joan Gamper

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi didn't train with his teammates on Friday for the second time this week because of a minor quadriceps injury.

Barça insisted Messi missed training to avoid risks, with LaLiga returning next week, while Ansu Fati also trained alone because of recent knee problems.

"Barça captain Leo Messi has a minor right quadriceps injury and trained in isolation, doing specific exercises to avoid unnecessary risks with just eight days remaining before Barça finally get back to playing matches," the Catalan club confirmed.

"He should be able to rejoin his team-mates in a few days’ time."

Quique Setien's side were back in training on Friday after a day off. Messi had also missed a session on Wednesday, leading to concerns ahead of the Mallorca game.

Meanwhile, Jorge Cuenca and Kike Saverio were called up from the B team on Friday along with the regulars Iñaki Peña, Ronald Araujo, Chumi, Monchu, Riqui Puig and Alex Collado.

The plan is to train at Camp Nou on Saturday as Barça prepare for football in empty stadiums following the coronavirus pandemic's shutdown of the game in March.
