Lionel Messi fights back in the race for the European Golden Shoe

LALIGA | Villarreal - FC Barcelona (0-2): El gol de Messi / | LALIGA

Messi was the only player in the top six to score this weekend

Cavani, Icardi, Immobile, Lewandowski & Falcao all fired blanks

Lionel Messi remains in the hunt for the European Golden Shoe after scoring the second goal in Barcelona's 2-0 win against Villarreal on Sunday.

Messi, who won the award last season, has 14 goals, which doubles to 28 points in the standings.

However, he is still three goals and six points behind the leader, Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, who didn't score this weekend.

The other players ahead of Messi failed to score this weekend, too, including Inter's Mauro Icardi, who didn't find the net in his side's goalless draw with Juventus.

It was also a blank weekend for Napoli's Ciro Immobile, Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Monaco's Radamel Falcao.

Here are the standings in the European Golden Shoe 2017/18:

  1. Edinson Cavani · PSG · 17 goals · 34 points
  2. Mauro Icardi · Inter · 16 goals · 32 points
  3. Ciro Immobile · Lazio · 15 goals · 30 points
  4. Robert Lewandowski · Bayern M. · 14 goals · 28 points
  5. Radamel Falcao · Monaco · 14 goals · 28 points
  6. Leo Messi · FC Barcelona · 14 goals · 28 points
