Lionel Messi contract renewal: The signing date does not affect salary limit

| sport

The Argentine's contract will have the same impact regardless of whether he signed before June 30 or not

Lionel Messi will sign on at Barcelona. After months without news, now he’s reached a deal with the club for the next five years at a 50 per cent pay cut.

Some news sources in recent days have claimed that Messi’s new contract would count as signing a new player because it was not agreed before June 30, when his old deal expired.

As a result, they claim, that Messi’s contract is subject to the 4-1 ratio from La Liga’s financial constraints.

However SPORT can confirm, after speaking to La Liga sources, that the date Messi signs the new contract will not have any impact on the club’s salary limit. So it doesn’t matter whether it was before June 30 or after. A renewal counts the same as an inscription for the league’s economic control, in effect.
