Lionel Messi aiming for his eighth Pichichi trophy

The Argentine forward is a menace for defences yet again this year

Bad times for Leo Messi haters. The Argentine forward is flying. He hit a double against Huesca in a 4-1 win that pulled Koeman’s Barca to within four points of Atletico.

It’s clear that winning the league is the main aim for Messi but with 21 goals he is also looking at his eighth Pichichi trophy, for Spain’s top scorer.

Of his strikes, 16 have come in the last 13 games, showing his fine form.

He is being followed by his good friend Luis Suarez, on 18. The Uruguayan has not lost his goalscoring nose. Behind them are Gerard Moreno and Karim Benzema on 15.

If Messi continues at this pace, he will win it again. His first was in 09-10, with 34 goals in 35. He hit the most goals in 11-12, with 50 in 37.

Messi scored 45 in 12-13 in five games fewer, while he grabbed 37 in 16-17 in 34 matches. In 17-18 he got 34 goals in 36 games, then 36 in 34 in 18-19. Finally in 19-20 he got 23 in 32. Those were the seven previous times he won.

He’s also fighting for the golden shoe. Messi is third with 42 points, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 46, and Robert Lewandowski is first on 64 points for his 32 Bundesliga goals.
