The 2019 Copa del Rey offers Lionel Messi the chance to become the first player to score goals in six cup finals, moving ahead of Telmo Zarra who netted in five.

The Athletic forward hit goals in five finals between 1942 and 1950.

That record has lasted through history but Messi can now beat it. He scored his first final goal in 2009 as Barca beat Athletic Bilbao 4-1 at Mestalla.

He didn't score in his second final as Real Madrid won 1-0 at Mestalla, but he did in the third, a 3-0 win over Athletic in 2012.

Again in 2014 he failed to score against Real Madrid (2-1 defeat, but hit a double against Athletic again in 2015, including one of the best goals of his career with a mazy dribble and driven finish.

In 2016 against Sevilla he set up two goals as Barca beat Sevilla 2-0 in extra-time but didn't net himself. In 2017 he did in a 3-1 win over Alaves, and then again he netted against Sevilla in a 5-0 win in 2018.

Facing Valencia tonight at the Benito Villamarin is a new chance for Messi.
