The Argentine star was given one of football's Oscars

On the 20th anniversary of the Laureus awards, considered the Oscars of sport, Leo Messi and Lewis Hamilton were the big winners at the gala in Berlin.

The Argentine was the first player to win a Laureus and it was the fourth distinction that Barcelona have received. In 2007 the club were recognised for their alliance with UNICEF. Four years later they were given the best team on the planet award, and in 2017 their infantil B team won a fair play award.

"It's an honour to be the first player on the team to receive this award and I'm grateful to the academy," said the player on a video played at the gala.

Messi also took to social media. "It was a true honour to receive the Laureus award for Sportsman of the Year. These individual prizes are impossible to get without the help and work my team-mates, my family, my friends and all the people that follow me. Many thanks to them and to the Laureus academy too!"
