Laporta's clean up job: The players who Barca want to sell

| sport

The president has to change the make-up of the squad for next season

Joan Laporta was clear. “A cycle is over and we’re starting a renovation process.” He didn’t wait too long to send the message and Barcelona are ready to start on their path from Monday, with the season over officially.

The club are planning an ambitious restructuring plan, although the reality is that it will be hard to follow to the letter as it depends on players and other clubs being open to moves.

There is a group of players who are untransferable: Ter Stegen, Araujo, Mingueza, De Jong, Pedri, Ilaix, Ansu and, if he renews, Lionel Messi.

They are considered vital pieces for next season’s Barca. The Catalans believe Messi will accept Joan Laporta’s new contact offer.

There are several players who the club would like to lose this summer at the right price.

Neto, Umtiti, Junior Firpo, Pjanic, Riqui Puig, Coutinho, Matheus, Griezmann, Braithwaite and Ousmane Dembele - the latter if he doesn’t sign a new deal.

Coutinho and Griezmann could bring in good money. If Messi doesn’t renew then the ex-Atletico man’s future may be at Camp Nou.

Perhaps more surprising for some is that Barca would also be happy to see Riqui Puig go out on loan. De Jong and Pedri have two of the midfield slots sewn up.

HEAVYWEIGHTS

There is another group. Pique, Jordi Alba, Busquets and Sergi Roberto, four La Masia graduates and three of them are captains, have a lot of respect from the club. Laporta, however, suggested that even some sacred cows could go. Barca hope they will accept considerable pay cuts and if not, then they may be sold.

There is uncertainty over another group. Sergino Dest, Trincao and Clement Lenglet. The former two arrived recently. Koeman likes Dest but Emerson could also arrive. Lenglet will be let go if there’s an interesting offer, while Trincao’s options to stay increase if Dembele goes.
