Laporta: "Messi wants the new Barcelona president to make him an offer"

Laporta habla sobre el futuro de Messi / | Marta Fernández

The former president has stepped up his campaign to return to Camp Nou this week

Barcelona presidential hopeful Joan Laporta has spoken once again about Lionel Messi's future at Camp Nou.

"We will use all our ability to ensure Leo continues," he said. "I am convinced he's wanting the new president of the club to make him an offer.

"He knows if I promise him a competitive team, I will keep my word. I have earned his trust. He told me himself that I have always delivered.

"But I am not in a position yet to be able to do so and to make him a proposal."

Messi, 33, is out of contract in June and can speak to other clubs from January onwards. Laporta says his departure would not be comparable to Cristiano Ronaldo's Real Madrid exit in 2018.

"Like Pele, Leo has the chance to spend his entire career with one team," he added. "And that would be really nice.

"We have to make an attractive proposal in all senses. I am sure that other clubs can offer more financially."
