Laporta confirms midfielder Gavi set to sign new Barcelona contract

The 17-year-old midfielder has had an outstanding debut season in the first team

There has finally been a breakthrough in talks to extend his Camp Nou deal

Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed during Thursday's general assembly that the club are close to agreeing on a new contract with midfielder Gavi.

Gavi, 17, is out of contract un 2023 and negotiations have been ongoing for months but an agreement is now finally imminent.

"Gavi's contract renewal is about to be finalised," Laporta said. "We're are in the final phase of sorting his new contract with the club."

Laporta continued: "We're closing the contracts with Araujo, the present and the future; Pedri, a reference already: we have Nico, Gavi, whose contract we're working on; and we have a young player from Racing Santander (Pablo Torre) coming in aged 19. We are building a team."

As with recent renewals, Gavi's release clause will rise to €1 billion and his salary will be similar to Araujo's, who renewed in April.

The young midfielder is already a regular in the Spain team and played 47 times for Barça last season, scoring twice and setting up seven goals.
