Javier Tebas wanted to draw a line under the controversy surrounding Messi's future

The president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, predicted a "really competitive" season and "sporting surprises" during the presentation for the 2020-21 campaign on Monday, which will be the 90th year of La Liga.

Tebas also expressed his satisfaction that the league's biggest star, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, will remain at Camp Nou for the next year at least.

"As a league, we try to keep our value domestically and internationally growing -- 90 years has given us a lot of experience to keep doing that. La Liga's in all four corners of the world through a local operator," said Tebas, referencing agreements with Greenland and Mongolia.

Tebas feels the competition "is going to throw up some surprises" this season given the effects coronavirus has had on clubs as they build their squads for the new campaign.

On Messi, he said: "La Liga must be above any player or club. But we always want to have Leo with us. He's been here for 20 years and as president of La Liga I would like him to end his career in our competition. But we've also been working so that the brand is above any one player or club."

Andrés Iniesta, Iker Casillas also took part in the presentation, along with La Liga ambassadord Fernando Sanz, Fernando Morientes, Luis García, Diego Forlán and Samuel Eto'o.
