Koeman says Messi still "very important" and praises Pedri's maturity

The Barça coach was happy with the 3-2 win against Athletic Club on Wednesday

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman spoke to the media after his side's 3-2 win against Athletic Club on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi scored twice and Pedri was also on target as Barça made it seven unbeaten in La Liga and moved third in the table.

"The result is a little tight in the end because we were superior in many phases of the games," Koeman said.

"They go ahead early on because of a lack of concentration in defence but then we took control, played well and were really focused. It's not easy here (at San Mames).

"I am happy with the result and with how we achieved it, coming from behind against a strong team. We deserved to win because of how we played and the chances we made. The team was phenomenal.

"We're going to fight until the final game. There's still a big gap between us and the top of the table, but we are on the right track, improving in many areas."

Koeman also spoke about Messi and Pedri, the stars of the performance: "Pedri is showing maturity despite his age (18). He's mature in terms of his quality but also, importantly, in his head.

"As I have said before, Leo's always shown desire and played well, maybe with the goals today (it's changed a little). He hit the woodwork, too, created, scored... it's what we want. He is a great player and is still very important for this team."
