Joan Laporta's board sign president's sister after changing ethics code

Previously it would not have been allowed but with the new change there is a post for her

Barcelona’s board has decided to hire Maite Laporta, sister of president Joan Laporta, to take over a new role, the head of inclusion and diversity. Her incorporation will be immediate, next Monday, and she will report directly to Xavier Mas, the chief compliance officer and delegate of data protection.

Barca wrote in an internal communication that “the club has moved for the creation of a new position that will ensure Barcelona are a club working for inclusion and cultural diversity, functional, generational and including gender within our collective.”

To bring in Laporta’s sister the board changed some of the club’s ethical code that has been in place since 2010.

The old rule said it was against the Code of Ethics "to contract in labour or commercial terms, ascending or descending relatives, either personally or through companies in which they participate or work.”

The new role says that is the case, “unless the professional solvency of the person to be hired, as well as their merits and conditions are verified and justify the objective convenience of hiring that person instead of another.”

The new rule adds: “In that case, it will be necessary to establish a comparison with two more candidates and a report and conclusion that will be submitted to the vote of the Board of Directors that will vote on whether or not to hire the corresponding person, with the abstention of the director who, in his case, may present a relationship or any other cause of incompatibility.”
