Joan Laporta wants to convince Leo Messi with a contract for life
The Barcelona forward is able to walk away in the summer if he so desires
Joan Laporta, recently elected as Barcelona’s new president, has clear priorities. He wants to convince Lionel Messi to stay and the club are looking for formulas to extend his contract.
El Confidential have published a story saying what they believe Laporta’s plan is. The chief will offer him a contract for life, in exchange for a pay reduction.
What Messi brings Barcelona is undoubted but the economic crisis means even he must suffer a pay cut if he is to stay.
It would be an important moment, if Barca’s captain and emblem decides to stay on a lower salary. It would show his team-mates the right thing to do and give an example in a tough time.
The pay cut would be around 30 per cent. One of the proposals, for example, would be to be a club ambassador, like Eric Abidal or Pau Gasol - recently back in the basketball team.
