Laporta beat Font and Freixa to be elected as Barça's new president on Sunday

The new Barcelona president Joan Laporta says Lionel Messi has already congratulated him for winning Sunday's election.

Messi voted in the election which saw Laporta return to the role he held until 2010 by beating Victor Font and Toni Freixa, with 55,000 members participating in the vote.

"It was really nice seeing Messi go and vote," Laporta sais on Catalunya Radio. "It's more proof that he loves Barca. I am convinced that he wants to stay. And yes, he's already congratulated me for winning."

With regards to possibly bringing Jordi Cruyff and Xavi Hernandez back to the club, Laporta said "I don't have any commitments to anyone out of respect for the people already working at the club."

After admitting he expected to win the election, he explained his first plans as president: "The first thing will be an audit but first I will meet the staff. The club has been rudderless and finally, we can make the necessary decisions.

"We will do an audit and put our emergency plan into place to make Barça economically sustainable."
