Joan Laporta is not in favour of signing Man City's Eric Garcia this month

The presidential hopeful is against spending money the club don't have in January

Joan Laporta, one of the three remaining candidates to be the new Barcelona president, is not in favour of signing Eric Garcia from Manchester City this month.

Laporta, who was Barça president from 2003 until 2010, believes the club should be careful due to their current financial position and wait until June, when Garcia could sign for free.

After meeting with acting president Carles Tusquets and the other two candidates, Victor Font and Toni Freixa, Laporta confirmed that "they informed us that there's a possibility that Eric Garcia comes (in January)."

However, Laporta pointed out that "the player, in June, is out of contract and, for that reason, would come on a free transfer as long as the sporting directorate in place at that time green light the signing.

"The club have informed us there is no money, that they have to look for imaginative ways to be able to pay (City around six million euros) that they can't pay right now.

"We have to see in June, when there is no transfer cost involved. Right now it involves the cost of the transfer and the player's salary."
