Joan Gamper trophy will only raise one million euros for Barcelona

The club had hoped to be allowed 50 percent capacity in their Camp Nou home for the game

The Joan Gamper trophy will be very special this season. For the first time since March 7, 2020, when Barcelona beat Real Sociedad 1-0 with a Lionel Messi penalty, fans will be back in Camp Nou. Financially, however, it won't have the desired impact for the Catalan club. Only one million euros will be made from the match against Juventus, around 10 percent of what the annual trophy usually generates.

The restrictions in place due to Covid-10 in Catalonia mean that having fans at the match at all had been up in the air. In the end, the local government has decreed that around 20,000 supporters will be allowed in the 100,000 seater stadium, which will lead to tickets sales and merchandise sales on the day. The club hoped that the health situation would have improved and that the stadium would have been at 50 percent capacity. Last year's Joan Gamper trophy against Elche was played without supporters.

Barça will host Juve on August 8, with the possibility of Cristiano Ronaldo coming up against Lionel Messi adding morbo to the fixture. Prior to the men's game, Barça and Juve's women's sides will play first at Camp Nou.

Once Barça have analysed the economic impact of the Gamper, they are seriously reconsidering the friendly against Manchester City, scheduled for August 19. The reason being the game is due to be played to raise money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a type of motor neurone disease that former coach Juan Carlos Unzue has. Barça are still waiting for confirmation about how many fans can attend the fixture.

Evidently, if the game has to be played behind closed doors or with limited fans, it doesn't make any sense as a fundraiser.
