A recognised economist says he would take the same measures in these trying times

Recognised economist José María Gay de Liébana says he is not surprised Barcelona are one of the La Liga clubs considering cutting players' salaries as income stalls due to the coronavirus crisis.

La Liga announced on Monday that they would support clubs who wanted to invoke ERTEs (a form of temporarily reducing wages or making temporary redundancies).

"I am not surprised Barça are one of the first clubs to propose a wage cut to their players," Gay de Liébana told El Larguero. "I made that suggestion to the directors of other clubs, not just Barça."

The economist, an Espanyol fan, added that "Barcelona's (financial) situation was already one of maximum tension before the arrival of the coronavirus."

For Gay de Liébana, he feels the predicament football finds itself in right now will create huge problems for clubs smaller than Barça. Third-tier Cornella, for example, have already announced ERTEs.

"I think it is going to affect the smaller clubs and teams in the second division." he said.
