"He is a player of FC Barcelona, the club I love"

Pep Guardiola has spoken in public for the first time since Manchester City tried to sign Lionel Messi from Barcelona this summer.

Guardiola, giving a press conference ahead of Monday's game against Wolves in the Premier League, was asked about Messi's push to leave Barça, even if it ended

"I don't have to explain anything," Pep said. "I think Leo explained quite well his feelings, I don't have anything to add. He is a player of FC Barcelona, the club I love."

He also refused to be drawn on if Messi could leave next summer, when his contract expires at Camp Nou, adding: "I don’t know. It’s a question for Leo Messi. I cannot talk about the intentions for other people."

Messi, 33, thought he could leave Barça for free this summer but backed down when it became apparent he would have to take the club to court to exercise the clause in his contract.

City were leading the way for his signature and, even if he wasn't able to leave for free, would have been keen to negotiate a price with Barça.
