The Spanish defender was hurt before the game but still played and had to go off
Gerard Pique had to go off injured after half an hour against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames. He went up for a ball against Berenguer and noted a problem with his left calf. He tried to continue but had to go off.
Ronald Araujo replaced him and slotted in beside Eric Garcia. The two youngsters had differing games, with the Uruguayan shining while the Spaniard was sent off and was at fault for the Athletic goal.
Pique had been a doubt for the game because of some muscle problems but Koeman said they weren’t anything to worry about. This injury seemed caused by the Berenguer clash rather than the previous problem, even though it affects the same area.
