Gerard Pique: I can't imagine Barcelona without Andres Iniesta
Pique doesn't think the moment has come yet for the captain to move on
But he knows that age waits for no player and the day to leave will come
Gerard Pique was asked about the future of Andres Iniesta, with the Barcelona captain yet to renew his contract and his long-term plans far from clear.
The Barça defender, one of Iniesta's team-mates, understands that time passes and no-one is immune to that fact. At some point, there comes a moment when everyone's playing days at Camp Nou come to an end.
"No, I can't imagine Barcelona without Iniesta, but there will be a day when it happens," Pique said at the opening of a new Cruyff Court in Catalonia on Wednesday.
"I couldn't imagine a team without Xavi or Puyi. But age passes you by and there comes a day when you have to raise your hand and admit you can't give anymore."
In that sense, Pique doesn't want to pressure anyone: "Iniesta himself, in his head, must assess, year on year, the age that he has... Next season he will be with us and at the end of the day what we have to do with players at that age is enjoy them as much as we can."
