Gavi's contract renewal is now urgent for Barcelona

The midfielder is continuing to shine for club and country and eyes are watching

Gavi’s Barcelona contract renewal is still stuck, while the player keeps moving forward and highlighting himself as one of the main jewels in the shop window. He put in another great performance against Portugal with Luis Enrique’s Spain side.

He was the man of the match and left hailed by fans at the Benito Villamarin stadium in Seville, as happened earlier in La Cartuja when he shone with his country against Sweden to help them reach the 2022 World Cup.

The player broke through for Spain in the Nations League final four against Italy and France. Now he has played seven games and is an indisputable starter for Spain.

Luis Enrique hailed him and said “it’s not just that he’s a top player in defence or that he’s very brave”, but also “he’s not yet known in Spanish football for all that he can do with the ball, as an interior and he can score.”

At Barcelona he has been consolidating, earning his place in midfield alongside Frenkie de Jong or Pedri. All that at 17 and he only has a year left on his deal that expires in 2023.

His agent Ivan de la Pena is in conversation with Barcelona but they are still a distance apart. Time is against the Catalans and with each game that passes he draws more interest. His release clause is 50m euros at the moment and Liverpool are alert to it.

Spain have three more Nations League games left in June, two against the Czech Republic and one against Switzerland, where Gavi could gain further protagonism.

Barcelona need to act quickly or they will be at risk of losing one of the world’s most promising young talent. With the Qatar World Cup in November approaching, the planet will soon know about Gavi.
