Frenkie de Jong's return to fitness is a big boost for Xavi, given Barça's injury crisis

The Dutchman is likely to cover for multiple positions in the upcoming matches, as a defensive player and as a playmaker

FC Barcelona's infirmary occupancy continues to rise. Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie were the latest players to move in after the defeat against Inter Milan. They now accompany Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Memphis Depay and Héctor Bellerín, who have been injured since the international break.

It's not all bad news for the Cules, however. Frenkie de Jong resumed training with the group on Wednesday and he is likely to be match-fit for Celta Vigo's visit to Camp Nou.

With the recovery of the Dutchman, Xavi now has a versatile player to fill in some of the holes. The 21 can play in three different positions - as an attacking midfielder, a pivot, or as a defensive cover.

Eric Garcia and Gerard Piqué are the only fit natural defenders in the team. Sergio Busquets is the sole defensive midfielder with Sergi Roberto covering as a fullback, Kessie and Christensen out injured. Given the fragility of these positions, Frenkie would be needed here the most.

It is still a possibility that he may be used higher up the pitch. Currently, Pedri and Gavi do not have any other substitutes in the first team. Pablo Torre could very well get some first-team minutes in the upcoming matches.

Some crucial matches await Barça in La Liga and even more so in the Champions League. The Dutchman and the Cantabrian are very likely to be called into action.

It is a coach's dream to have many 'wild cards' like Frenkie in their squads. De Jong's versatility is a godsend for Xavi at this crucial moment of the season. Barça will play seven matches of vital importance from this Sunday until the stoppage of the club competition for the World Cup in Qatar. Any help will be most welcome.
