The Dutchman opened up about his transfer saga to De Telegraaf

Frenkie de Jong was one of the focal points of the last transfer window. The midfielder seemed destined to leave Barça for the Premier League, where Manchester United and Chelsea awaited him.

However, the Dutchman's will prevailed and his goal to succeed at Camp Nou remains intact.

"I wanted to prove that I am better than the others and that I deserve to be in the starting eleven," he told De Telegraaf in an interview.

"Because of the situation I was in, I knew I would play a bit less at the beginning of the season than before. I was still getting some minutes, coming in and playing a game now and then," he adds.

The midfielder admits to being very happy in the Catalan capital. "I think the club is now on the rise again, it has started to grow. When I play it's great and in terms of life it's perfect".

Regarding the leaks of his Barça contract, De Jong explained that "a newspaper published things about my contract. I didn't leak it and there was only one other party who was aware of the contract. So that had to come from the club and you think: it's not necessary. And suddenly there was an outcry about whether my contract was valid because the previous president Bartomeu was the one who signed off on it. I was irritated that the club did it, but I did not influence it".
