The Dutch coach and sports staff at the time decided not to sign the Milan midfielder
Franck Kessie will play next season at Barcelona, arriving on a free transfer from AC Milan. His name is not a new one, but one who was offered to Barcelona last year with a year remaining on his deal. Ronald Koeman and the sports staff said no at the time, not convinced that he had the technical quality to wear Blaugrana. Conversations reopened in December with both Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff happy for him to come.
Koeman did want a midfielder of this profile in the squad and was trying to sign Wijnaldum, who ended up at PSG. They also preferred Denis Zakaria.
But after the structure changed at Barcelona they reopened conversations with Kessie and his people and reached a deal.
We will have to see whether or not he can fit into the combination play Barcelona like or if he will suffer. In Milan he has stood out for his physicality, something appreciated in Italian football.
