Since 2010-11, at least one of the Clasico rivals has always made the last four

The new Copa del Rey format installed this season has ended hegemony of Spanish football's big two, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both knocked out in the quarterfinals this week.

Madrid were beaten 4-3 a home to Real Sociedad and Barça went down to a stoppage-time goal at Athletic Club to leave the competition without either Clasico rival in the semifinals for the first time in 10 years.

Between them, Madrid and Barcelona have won seven of the last 10 Spanish cups (Barca five, Madrid two) and at least one of them has been in the final (Barça eight times, Madrid three) since 2010-11.

For the first time in 10 years, though, neither will even be in the final four. In 2009-10, Barça were knocked out in the last 16 by Sevilla, while Madrid were stunned by Alcorcon.

Since then, Barca have always made the semifinal. In fact, they have only missed three of the last nine finals. In 2012-13, Madrid knocked them out in the semifinals. They won the trophy in 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and were runners up in 2011, 2014 and 2019, losing the first two to Madrid and the latter one to Valencia.

Madrid haven't always done so well in the competition. They lost to Barca in the quarters in 2011-12 and in 2014-15 were knocked out in the last 16 by Atletico. A year later, they were kicked out after fielding an ineligible player against Cadiz and in the following two years they lost to Celta and Leganes.

Last season, Los Blancos made the last four when they were beaten by Barcelona, the team they beat in the final when they won the cup in 2011 and 2014.
