Mateu Alemany has reportedly called the president of the Basque club, Jon Uriarte, asking for the centre-back, who is looking forward to a final big move of his career

It seems Barça have given up on Jules Koundé, but Xavi Hernández wants a left-footed centre-back to complete his squad. According to Onda Vasca, the Blaugrana club has now contacted Athletic to negotiate the signing of Inigo Martinez. Barçá's director of soccer, Mateu Alemany, reportedly called on Jon Uriarte to initiate talks, and the 31 year old would be willing to sign on as it might be his last chance to sign a big contract in his professional career.

Iñigo Martínez has already been linked with Barça on numerous past occasions, and was almost signed by former coach Ernesto Valverde. Xavi understands him perfectly and knows that he can be an important player given his good ball control and his physical strength. However, negotiations with Athletic are never straightforward, and it remains to be seen if they are willing from their end.

The Spanish international has a buy-out clause of 80 million euros, but his current contract situation might allow for the reduction of his transfer fee. He is but one among Barça's several options to reinforce their defence.
