Europa League progress, relief for Barcelona in the bank

The Catalans were given a boost financially by reaching the next round

Champions League, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup knock-out have hurt Barcelona, but the comeback against Galatasaray was a shot in the arm. Both in the sporting sense and financially.

The goodbye to the Champions league left a 20.2 million euro hole in the Blaugrana’s budget. Joan Laporta’s board had expected to reach the quarter finals at least, so they lost out on the 9.6m for getting through the groups and 10.6m for reaching the last eight.

Barcelona will earn 1.8m for playing in the quarter finals of the Europa League, adding to the 500k from the playoff round and 1.2m from the last 16. They have already received 3.5m more than if they had not been in the competition.

If Barcelona win the trophy they would earn a total of 14.9m, minimising their losses. Next up, Eintracht Frankfurt.
