The Uruguayan wanted a deal at Camp Nou until he was 37 years old

If it wasn't for testing positive for Covid-19, Luis Suarez would have faced his former side on Saturday when Atletico Madrid host Barcelona.

Suarez, 33, swapped Barça for Atletico in the summer after the Catalan club told him he was not part of the new project under coach Ronald Koeman.

Prior to that, though, when his future was still in the air, the Uruguaya striker had asked the club for a new four-year deal, according to Esport 3.

The show Onze has reported that Suarez wanted a contract until he was 37 years old but that the club felt that his request was unrealistic keeping in mind his age and his form.

Suarez's Barça deal was due to expire in 2021 but both parties agreed to end it early to allow him to sign for Diego Simeone's Atletico side.

He left Barça as the third top scorer in the club's history following six years with the club after signing from Liverpool in 2014.
