The project was initially expected to cost around 600 million euros
More problems for Joan Laporta, who took over knowing the situation was complicated and is finding out increasingly just how. Per RAC1 the budget for Espai Barca has shot up and it’s now expected to cost over 1 billion euros.
Per the radio station sources close to the project have said that the reform of Camp Nou and its surroundings, the construction of a new Palau Blaugrana and the Johan Cruyff stadium - the only part completed - will cost far more than the 600m euros approved in 2014 by referendum, and the 815 agreed with Goldman Sachs in October 2020. The estimations of Bartomeu’s board are coming up short.
Laporta and his team will have to reconfigure the project so it’s viable in the medium to long term. Barca are also in a dire financial situation at the moment.
