The centre-back trained with his teammate for the first time since November

Barcelona returned to training on Friday ahead of Sunday's trip to Athletic Club boosted by the presence of Samuel Umtiti.

The French defender, who has not played since November, took part in some of the session with the squad as he continues his comeback from a knee injury.

Ernesto Valverde also included B team players Iñaki Peña, Moussa Wague and Morer in the session, as well as Juvenil A's Tenas.

Without doubt, though, the big news from the session was Umtiti taking part. The French defender has opted to avoid surgery on his knee in favour of more conservative treatment.

His objective is to be fit to face his former side, Lyon, in the Champions League later this month.

Meanwhile, coach Valverde has other issues to decide on before the trip to San Mames, such as Lionel Messi's fitness for the game.

The Argentine injured his thigh against Valencia and was only fit enough to play the last 30 minutes against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Barça will train again on Saturday, with the squad for the game in the Basque Country announced after that session.
