Debate at Barca over the signing of a right back

| sport

The position is one which the club are thinking about reinforcing

Barça are continuing to plan for next season and the club is already debating the need to bring in a top-class right-back. Xavi Hernández knows that he will not be able to fulfil all his wishes and prioritised the arrival of a defensive midfielder in addition to Gundogan, but in the sporting department it is clear that a top-level specialist in that position must be brought in. There are advanced options and now everything indicates that it will become a priority.

The Blaugrana was planning without the option of bringing in a full-back. The coaches felt that Koundé and Araujo could fill that role alongside Sergi Roberto, but the Frenchman's recent performances have set alarm bells ringing. Koundé was brought in to start at centre-back - a position in which he is more comfortable - and he is not performing well on the wing. Xavi sees Araujo more as a centre-back, although he has performed well in difficult games on the right, and Sergi Roberto is a wildcard to be used occasionally.

The debate has been open for several weeks and has not been settled. The Blaugrana have very limited resources and it is very unlikely that an expensive signing like Foyth will be available. The Barça coach believes the Argentine would close any debate because he sees him as the best right-back in La Liga. He is a very competitive player, but his price is 60 million euros and Villarreal do not intend to negotiate.

Barça believe it would be much more feasible to go for a market opportunity with an experienced player. Pavard is expensive and it looks like he will renew at Bayern, while Cancelo and Meunier are still on the table. Things have changed and, now, Barça are already looking to bring in a top-level specialist to be able to compete in European football.
