The Dutch midfielder did not want to leave but things are changing

United will make him the leader of their project under Erik ten Hag

Frenkie de Jong has overcome the doubts he has about a move to Manchester United and is now open to negotiating with the English club, according to Sky Sports.

The midfielder has finally accepted that leaving Barcelona is possible this summer if there is an agreement that satisfies all three parties.

The advance comes as conversations between Manchester United and Barça are classified as positive, so an agreement between the clubs could be close.

However, it's also necessary for De Jong to have his needs met, something he and his agent are now working on with both clubs.

Only for a big fee

Talks are now on two paths. Firstly between the clubs, who must reach an agreement on a fee both consider acceptable. Barça were always receptive to bids, but made it clear that they would only sell for a big price. He is still a regular under coach Xavi Hernandez.

On the pitch, he has not shown all his talent, though, and the club feel his exit could help build the new project, as long as United pay more than €80 million. Negotiations are largely based on fixed fees and add-ons.

Star at Old Trafford

The other path is the talks between De Jong and United. De Jong is now open to accepting the offer from Erik ten Haf, who was his coach at Ajax and is now in charge at Old Trafford. He has told De Jong he will be the cornerstone of his United team.

Both Barça and United want to close an agreement as quickly as possible and the fact the player has given the green light to negotiations could speed things up.

The English side want De Jong to have a full preseason under Ten Hag and to be on the tour of Thailand and Australia. Barça need to reduce their wage bill and make transfers to be able to sign.
