The former Barcelona captain did not want to come back to Camp Nou at this time
Carlos Puyol published a statement on social media explaining he was turning down the role of Barcelona sporting director.
Josep Maria Bartomeu recently said the club was negotiating Puyol’s arrival and he was optimistic the former captain would return to the role left vacant since Pep Segura departed.
However Puyol published a statement reading: “In recent weeks they have published different news stories about my possible incorporation as Barcelona’s sporting director. That is why I feel obliged to tell the Cule family that after thinking about it a lot, I decided not to accept the club’s offer.
“It was not an easy decision, I always said I would like to return to the place I consider my home, but various personal projects I find myself immersed in at the moment would stop me from giving the exclusive dedication this role deserves. I want to thank the club for their confidence in me by offering me this position of so much responsibility.”
