Barça are keen to strengthen at the back this summer but Meunier's age could be a problem

Borussia Dortmund have put a price on Thomas Meunier, the Belgian right-back in whom Barcelona are interested. The German club is willing to transfer the player who does not fit in the plans of Terzic Edin, the coach. Meunier started the season as a starter but since October he has lost this rank. Since then, between injuries (first a muscle injury and now a back injury) and being benched, he has barely featured in the team's games. He has made 10 appearances this season.

Meunier is in his fourth season at Borussia Dortmund after arriving from PSG on a free transfer. He signed a five-year contract and his deal expires at the end of next season. Dortmund already know of Barcelona's interest and in the first talks between the two clubs, the German asked for €15 million as a transfer fee, a figure that Barcelona are not willing to reach considering that he is a player who is not a starter.

Age a handicap

There is another argument that Barcelona are using in these negotiations, which is the player's age. He is now 31 years old and they believe that at this stage of his career his cost should be closer to zero. Barça even considered an exchange with Sergiño Dest.

Sporting director Jordi Cruyff knows the player well and has good references from the former Belgian coach Robert Martinez, who has a good relationship with Jordi. The player is interested in a change of scenery and coming to Barcelona, taking into account Xavi's interest in bringing him in.
