Bayern Munich's fruitless attempts to sign Barça midfield duo Pedri and Gavi

Bayern offered Barça 12 million euros for Pedri in 2020 and tried to interfere in the Catalan club's attempts to renew Gavi

Barça announced the renewal of Gavi on Wednesday, a day after the defeat at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich.

The timing of the announcement is curious, to say the least, given that the Germans were trying to prevent Gavi's contract extension by Barça to take him to Munich. His release clause of 50 million euros was an extra impetus given how well he has established himself in Xavi's preferred starting XI.

Fortunately, the young midfielder declined proposals from Germany and reached an agreement with FC Barcelona to stay at the club until 2026.

Journalist Sique Rodriguez claims that Bayern were also interested in Gavi's midfielder partner Pedri, having tried to sign him after the famous 2-8 Champions League defeat in 2020. The Bavarians offered 12 million euros.

Even back then, Barça were adamant about keeping the midfielder from the Canary Islands and closed the doors on negotiations. There were doubts if he would fit in the team or would have to be sent out on loan, with the club deciding that he was ready.

In hindsight, these two decisions look to be as good as making galactico signings, if not better, having retained two of the midfielders with some of the highest potentials in world football.

Barça can now build a team around them for years to come, given their young ages. Both have an agreement to stay with the azulgrana until the summer of 2026.
