The president spoke with Messi on Wednesday morning after Tuesday's events

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has taken the first steps towards calming the storm that engulfed the club on Tuesday night.

Things reached boiling point when Lionel Messi took to Instagram to criticise an interview Eric Abidal had given to Diario SPORT.

Messi objected to Abidal's comments that some players "were not happy nor working hard" under former coach Ernesto Valverde and told the sporting director to take responsibility for his own actions and name players rather than generalising.

SPORT has now learned that the president believes the situation can be stabilised and as things stand he is not thinking about taking any drastic measures.

Bartomeu does not believe sacking Abidal will be the solution to anything and his challenge is now to unite everyone's efforts in the second half of the season.

Barça are preparing for two tough away games and need all focus on the pitch. They travel to Athletic Bilbao for their Copa del Rey quarterfinal on Thursday and then to Seville to meet Real Betis in La Liga on Sunday.
