The Catalans were over a billion but have nearly fallen by half

Barcelona’s squad value has fallen, according to Transfermarkt. In 2017, 18 and 19, the players were worth 1.14 billion, 1.160 and 1.050 respectively.

Now it has dipped to 696 million, according to their latest report. Effectively Barca have lost 464 million in terms of squad value.

Of course, the reality is that the market is deflated and so the players are worth less now than when it was at its height.

Plus, the Catalans lost Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann in recent times, players who still have high values despite their ages.

The Uruguayan left when he was valued at 18m euros, while Messi was 80m and Griezmann 60m respectively.

Meanwhile players like Busquets, Pique and Alba dip in value over time, while others like Coutinho, Umtiti and Dembele have fallen too because of form or injury.

Coutinho, for example, was worth 150m euros in October 2018 to 30m euros now.

Atletico Madrid currently have a squad worth more than Barca’s. Madrid have fallen from 1.180 bn to 783.5m. Atletico have kept some stability, going from 829.4m to 755.2m in the last two years. Griezmann arriving actually tipped the balance there.

If we look at Europe, the sensations are even more worrying. Barca are 10th. behind City (1.04bn), PSG (998.95), United (937), Chelsea (881.5), Liverpool (879.5) and even Tottenham (698). The Premier League’s economic strength is evident.
