Barcelona's solution for the Samuel Umtiti situation
The French defender might go back to Lyon this summer now his deal is more reasonable
Samuel Umtiti has become a big problem for Barcelona since his knee issues started. He has not wanted to take surgery and it means he cannot compete regularly. Right now he’s out with a foot issue and his future is unknown.
Barcelona want him to go this summer and it will be easier after he accepted a deal in January until 2026 which lowers his yearly salary greatly.
His most likely destination is back to France. Former side Lyon could bring him in now that he’s more affordable.
Umtiti thinks he’s fit in terms of his knee and he did play some games last season, although looked far from match fit. This season he has not been in Xavi’s plans at all but he is finding his fitness again.
Barcelona think he should go to Lyon, who know him and can look after him and give him minutes. They are also looking at Tolisso and Lacazette, who previously played there too.
Umtiti wants to succeed at Barcelona but there will be no space with Christensen coming in too. He rejected a move to Turkey last summer and met with Joan Laporta to ask for a last chance at Barcelona.
What all parties want is that Umtiti is happy and playing. Other French clubs could also open their doors.
