Barcelona's objective: To save on Umtiti and Lenglet's salaries

Barcelona are working against the clock to try and strengthen their squad with the aim of competing in Europe next season. The club's finances are going to play a major role in what they can do, with up to 12 players set to leave and as many as seven or eight targetted to come in. It will be a long summer.

Coach Xavi and the club will this week speak to players and their camps about their situations and among the priorities they have are finding new homes for defender Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti to be able to sign another centre-back.

Umtiti and Lenglet's situations are different. Umtiti has not played for a long time although he could get minutes this weekend to show he has recovered. He helped the club in January by extending his contract on a reduced wage by spreading it out. It helped Barça make signings. The only possibility is to send him out on loan, paying part of his salary, and he seems ready to do that. In France, there is interest. It's difficult but not impossible.

As for Lenglet, he knows he won't get minutes ahead of the World Cup if he stays. He could receive offers but Barça believe a transfer will be difficult because his salary is high, too high for a favourable operation. Therefore, a loan is not ruled out given his now practically armotised. The priority is to make money, but for now there are no satisfactory offers for all parties. So the next priority is to save on his wage. Nothing is ruled out.

In the case Umtiti and Lenglet both leave, Barça could sign another left-footed centre-back for Xavi. There are interesting options.
