Barcelona's great start to 2021 has not gone unnoticed. Despite the Champions League elimination to Paris Saint-Germain, the Blaugrana have fought their way back into the La Liga title race thanks to an 18-game unbeaten run and are into the Copa del Rey final on April 17. One of the main reasons for Barça's form has been Lionel Messi's form.

The Argentine, in fact, has been distinguished as the best player of the first trimester of 2021 by the CIES Football Observatory. The study has awarded Messi 92.5 points for his performances based on a unique methodolgy, ahead of Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) and Jorginho (Chelsea) who have the same score (89.5). Manchester City's Ruben Dias is fourth and Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo is fifth.

To find the highest-ranked Real Madrid player, you have to drop to seventh, where Toni Kroos is, while Luis Suarez is Atletico Madrid's highest entry, down in 17th place.

CIES explained of the study: "The CIES Football Observatory has developed a unique methodology to compare the performance of players irrespective of their position.

"Issue number 331 of the Weekly Post highlights the outfield footballers with the highest score for domestic league matches played since the 1st of January 2021 for each of the 98 big-5 league clubs. Only players fielded for at least two thirds of minutes during this period are included in the rankings."
