The defender has returned two negative tests and has the green light to begin training

Barcelona released a brief statement on Wednesday confirming that first team defender Samuel Umtiti has recovered from coronavirus.

Umtiti tested positive for the virus on August 14, the same day Barça were beaten by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, although he didn't travel for the game because he was injured.

"Barça can confirm that centre-back Samuel Umtiti has received the all-clear following his Covid-19 infection," the club announced.

The France international had to test negative twice to be given the green light to return to the club's training facilities for preseason.

However, the defender has still not been able to join training with his teammates as he recovers from a knee injury.

UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Umtiti should be able to gradually return to training soon, though, although in principle he is not in new coach Ronald Koeman's plans.

Barça are looking to move him on -- either on loan or a transfer -- but have not yet found anyone willing to sign him due to his injury history and a large salary.

There have been talks about swapping him for Lyon's Memphis Depay, but the French club's sporting director, Juninho, said: "He's an interesting player but Lyon cannot take on his salary."
