Barcelona release medical statement on Gerard Pique injury

The defender is not well after the Sevilla comeback he helped inspire

After new tests taken on Gerard Pique, Barcelona can confirm that he has suffered a lateral ligament sprain in his right knee. It’s the same place he was injured in before which kept him out for months.

Early reports suggested the injury was not serious, but Pique will miss the clash with Osasuna on Saturday and likely the Champions League last 16 return against PSG.

Pique suffered the injury in the 3-0 Copa win over Sevilla which helped Barca come from behind to reach the final. He was feeling his right knee in extra-time and used his left leg after that when he could.

The club did not specify his expected absence length but it is expected to be a couple of weeks at least.

It leaves Lenglet, Umtiti and Mingueza as the only fit defenders, with Ronald Araujo close to a comeback too.
