Barcelona reaffirm their total confidence in coach Xavi for the future
The Barça boss is likely to renew his contract once the LaLiga title is won
It was a night of long faces in the Camp Nou box after the painful defeat in the Copa del Rey against Madrid. The Blaugrana board had high hopes of winning the treble of domestic titles, so the elimination came as a bitter pill to swallow.
In spite of everything, Barça reaffirm their total and absolute confidence in Xavi Hernández for the future and this has been made known to him. Nothing changes and the club will propose his renewal once the league title is secured, something that could be achieved at the beginning of May.
Barça are convinced that Xavi Hernández is the ideal person to try to revitalise the club after several years of debacles. Last season the coach managed to steer the ship back to Champions League qualification and this summer players were signed for around €150 million to carry out a first revolution of the squad to the coach's liking. It was the first step towards a second revolution that will also be led by Xavi.
Barça's idea is to continue building the project with Xavi as the visible head. As the president, Joan Laporta, explained, there is no better coach who understands the Blaugrana philosophy, knows the club and has the capacity to take on the financial situation of the club at the moment. The season is considered to have been a very good one in La Liga, the championship of consistency, so the foundations have been laid to be great again in Europe in the near future. It is clear that the club needs to take a step forward in the Champions League and also become stronger in top-level games and this will be achieved by stabilising the squad with the arrival of some experienced players to help the team grow.
Xavi was critical after the defeat, aware of the discouragement that such a heavy loss against Madrid generated in the eyes of the fans. But the coach also asked to turn the page because the number one objective this season is to win the league again, something they have in their hands because of the 12-point gap they have over Los Blancos. The coach will make planning decisions on the basis of that title, although it is clear that the squad will have to be overhauled next season.
The Blaugrana coach has already expressed his wishes to the sports area ahead of a summer that will be complicated because of the salary limit. Xavi knows that he will have to make drastic decisions with some surgical departures that will allow him to bring in money to be able to afford the reinforcements. These are delicate issues within the dressing room, so everything will have to wait until the end of May. The objectives in terms of signings are very, very clear and everything indicates that there will be a revolution in the attacking positions.
