With work starting at Camp Nou, Barça are looking at options away from Montjuic

FC Barcelona are considering taking the 58th edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy to Basel (Switzerland). It would be the first time that the tournament, which was launched in the summer of 1966, would be played outside Catalonia. The news has been advanced this Thursday by the show 'Tot Costa' on Catalunya Ràdio and Sport, as well as confirming it, can add the figure that is being considered for the match: 1.5 million euros. As for the date, there are two options, depending on when LaLiga starts (weekend 8-9 or 15-16 August).

Basel is a candidate to host the next Joan Gamper Trophy due to its historical relationship with FC Barcelona. The club's founder, Joan Gamper, was captain of Basel and it was in Basel that the team won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1978-79. They defeated Fortuna Düsseldorf in the final in extra time (4-3).

The FC Barcelona board, considering that the Joan Gamper Trophy in 2023 would have to be played in the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys de Montjuïc, feel that Basel could provide a higher income from this match, estimating the value of the match at around 1.5 million euros. The Gamper has already been played twice in Montjuïc due to problems with the Camp Nou turf (1990-91 and 1996-97).

Victory last time

The last edition of the Gamper was played on Sunday 7 August 2022 at Spotify Camp Nou. Xavi Hernandez's side ran out convincing 6-0 winners over Mexico's UNAM with goals from Lewandowski, Pedri (2), Dembélé, Aubameyang and De Jong. There were 83,021 spectators in attendance.
