The interim president says the New Year is likely to be the best time for elections

Barcelona will call presidential elections just after Christmas, the club's acting president Carles Tusquets announced in a press conference on Monday.

Barça have to call elections between 40 and 90 days after the date when the previous president resigned. Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board of directors stepped down last Tuesday.

Tusquets explained that the interim board "have decided to call elections around the Christmas dates" after a meeting at the club on Monday.

He added that Barça will "call them as soon as possible as long as the health conditions and restrictions allow" in a nod towards the coronavirus pandemic.

In that sense, he said that "we have still not met with the local government, but the information we have is that it will be complicated to hold a vote between November and December, therefore early January looks on the cards.

The acting president made it clear that everything will be coordinated with the Catalan government with the pandemic in mind.

Therefore, the new president and board should be in power by the beginning of January, although that could make it tough to make signings mid-season.
