Barcelona in contact with Marco Asensio over free transfer in the summer

The Real Madrid player's future is now in the hands of Jorge Mendes, who is close to Barça

Marco Asensio, a Real Madrid player for seven seasons, is negotiating a new deal. His contract ends on June 30 and Florentino Perez has presented him with a renewal offer... at a low price. At the moment, the two parties have not reached an agreement because the player's demands are greater than what the Madrid president is willing to offer.

Asensio has also been losing importance in the team and it is something that has invited him to reflect -- to the point of taking advantage of the fact that he is now in the final six months of his terms and, according to FIFA regulations, he can negotiate with other clubs.

Asensio made a strange move a few months ago when he changed his longtime agent, Horacio Gaggioli, to put himself in the hands of Jorge Mendes. The Portuguese super-agent has access to many clubs, in the Premier League… and in Barcelona. And this is what has happened in recent months. Asensio has probed different options away from Real Madrid and one of them is Barça.

Barça have a close relationship with Mendes and one of the topics of conversation, or negotiation, that they have raised for the future, apart from Rúben Neves, is that of Asensio. Barcelona and the player's agent have discussed the possibility of him ending up at Barça, taking advantage of the fact that he would arrive free and there is no transfer fee to pay.

As far as is known, there is still no agreement between the two parties. Actually, Asensio still hasn't decided anything about his future. He could stay in Madrid. He could go to the Premier League or sign for Barcelona. Everything is open.

Of course, as the weeks go by, the chances of him continuing in Madrid are reduced. His case is not that of Modric or Kroos, who due to their age and career are closely linked to Los Blancos. Asensio is 27 years old, he still has a lot of football ahead of him and his role within the white team does not invite him to be optimistic because, little by little, he has been losing his place.

Asensio, a native of Mallorca, was one step away from signing for Barcelona in 2014, but then the club refused to pay Mallorca about €4 million to sign him and he ended up going to Madrid. In recent weeks, Asensio has been asked on a few occasions about a hypothetical departure from Madrid and about the possibility of going to Barça. "The only thing I think about is Real Madrid, I'm happy there, but in the future, you never know what can happen," he said.
